Azerbaijani boxer wins Olympics championship

Boxer Rufet Huseynov has earned the Azerbaijani national team a new medal at the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games hosted by the Chinese city of Nanjing.

Competing in the weight category of 49kg, the Azerbaijani boxer won the top prize of the tournament, apasport.az reported.

In his first two fights, he defeated Kumar Kakaraya (India) and Shalkar Aykinbaya (Kazakhstan). In today’s final encounter, He took on his Uzbekistani opponent Sulaymon Latipov. The Azerbaijani boxer won the all three rounds, giving no chance to the opponent. Winning the gold medal, Huseynov earned our national team the 3rd gold medal.

 

Note that, the Azerbaijani team had gained 9 medals at this tournament, and the number changed to 10 on the last day of the games. Our team’s previous medals had been attained by Islambek Dudov (69kg, Greco-Roman wrestling), Said Guliyev (73kg, Taekwondo, gold medal), Leyla ALiyeva (44kg), Natiq Qurbanli (55kg, both Judo), Ceren Özbek (44kg, Taekwondo), Jabbar Najafov (50kg, Greco-Roman wrestling), Leyla Qurbanova (52kg, freestyle wrestling), Boris Yotov (academic rower, silver medal), and Nazim Babayev (athletics).
