The tension along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border has recently escalated, OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier told APA's Moscow correspondent on Oct.12.

He said there is a need for an increased political attention to the problem, noting that he thinks the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs are planning one more meeting with the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents.

“This is a time when the international community should draw attention to the need to settle this situation,” he said.

Zannier reminded that the OSCE has a special group monitoring the region, adding that a number of vital steps have been taken.

“We have developed a set of principles to ease the situation, so that both sides could contribute to the resolution of this issue. Use of heavy weaponry is especially worrying. I believe a time has come for political initiatives to resolve this matter,” said Zannier, expressing hope that a meeting between the Azerbaijani and Armenian president will soon take place.
